Assessment Information
1. Student mastery of spelling and phonemic objectives will be assessed on a weekly basis.
2. Students may be given one of three types of tests – (1) the standard spelling test where words are read by the instructor and students are required to write them, (2) the picture-sort spelling test where students are given a set of pictures and asked to separate them into like-pairs or categories or (3) a combination of the two.
3. The weekly assessment type may be determined by the word/picture list sent home. If the list contains only words, the test will be standard. If the list contains only *pictures, the test will be a sort. If the list contains both words and pictures, students will be assessed on their ability to write the words and sort the pictures.
4. All tests will include dictation sentences.
Students will be assessed on the following:
Correct use of lower and upper case letters
End punctuation
Inclusion of all words (The spelling of words will not be assessed.)
Correct spelling of the week’s phonemic focus
(For example, if students are studying sh and the student writes My shu is big. it would be considered correct since the student has demonstrated his or her understanding of sh.)
*Pictures that include printed words on the back are not to be spelled. Words are included for identification purposes only.
